Emergency calls are an especially important feature of the public telephony system. These calls are placed by an individual to avert threat to life or physical condition and to property by calling an authority, e.g. the police. In almost any emergency situation, the timely arrival of action forces is essential. Countless times, emergency callers reach emergency call centres – via fixed line phones, mobile phones or Internet phones. Calls placed via the Internet (e.g. Voice over IP – VoIP), are often not handled properly nowadays.
This training explains the reasons and shortcomings of today’s VoIP emergency calling. A detailed discussion of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) emergency calling framework (ECRIT framework) is the main part of the training. Certainly all current topics and developments will be covered.
This training can be ideal to prepare for next generation emergency calling (often referred to as NG911 or NG112), equally interesting for operators of public safety answering points/emergency calling centres, providers of VoIP services, access network operators as well as VoIP software and hardware manufacturers. Furthermore, this training could be also be used to gather knowledge for a first step in location based servers by using the same architecture as for emergency calling, realized utilizing the same protocols.
